We will hold the workshop by limitimg the number of people to prevent the coronavirus infection.
We may change our schedule because of the coronavirus.
If Japanese government declare the emargency, the workshop will be canceled.

 
First term: August 3(Wed)~7(Sun)
Second term: August 24(Wed)~28(Sun)

Number of perticipants will be limited to 10 in each term

Where did the clothes you wear come from?

Where did the clothes you weare come from?
Did you buy it at the store?
Most of them would be like that.
But do you know where  they were made before they came to the store?
They might be made at the sewing factory, the weaving factory, and the knitting factory.
So, where did the threads come from before they became the cloth?
Of course, they are yarn shops and thread wholesalers.
Then, where did yarns and threads come from?
cotton balls for cotton
sheeps for wool
silkworm for silk
Oil and coal for chemical synthetic fibers
As the above mentioned, all clothes have its origin in the nature.
you will find all processes of making cloth, from harvesting to weaving, in this workshop.

Kudzu is one of the autumn seven herbs, and kudzufu refers to the textile that is made from the fibers taken out of the arrowroot vines.
It is a very historic textile and is considered as one of the three majour primitive fabrics in Japan.
In Enshu region of Shizuoka Prefecture, people has been used kudzu thread for weft and cotton yaen for warp.We will hold the workshop twice to learn how to make it and its history.
 
We can accept the participants from over seas.There are variety of people such as amateurs, hobbyists, artists, researchers, and more. Some of them consider kudzufu is one of the way to solve the environmental issues.

If there are more than three participants on the same terms from abroad, we can organize an  workshop in English with a special schedule other than the above.

Schedule

Exciting  5 days with fieldwork and lecture.

Day 1

hervesting, making bed for kudzu, fermentation, lecture about kudzu

Day 2

lecture about the history of kudzufu(Can kudzufu solve the environmental problem?)

making tuguri(a bundle of kudzu thread shaped like figure eight) from kuzuo(inner skin of kudzu vine)

Day 3

dyeing of kudzufu with natural materials

Day 4

washing kudzu vines in the river

making tuguri

Day 5

weaving

completion ceremony

If you want to cancel the course under emergency circumstances, we will refund you JP¥70400 minus a remittance charge.
This condition is valid if you will cancel the course by the day before the workshop.
You can not cancel the course  after you start taking the course.

dyeing material costs ( about JP¥5000~JP¥20000) kudzuo,kudzu thread, kudzu textile, silk thread, cotton yarn, etc
You can also pay for it by credit card
accommodation fee(brekfast is included at some hotels)     we can arange some hotels for you
lunches and dinners
transportation expenses from the hotel to our workshop

Harvesting: long sleeves, long pants, hats, sunscreen cream, etc        
Do not wear the blackish clothes, or you will become the target of bees
Washing kudzu vines: We will go to the river.  You need a half pants or swimsuit, rubberished sandals or boots, and hat.
Weaving: scissors,glassed, etc
Others: chronic disease medications, insecticides, etc
